Venting inefficiencies can lead to a fire hazard

The goal of BetterVenting is to provide you with valuable information on dryer efficiency and performance and to create awareness on the importance of dryer safety.

It all begins with paying attention to what is going on behind the dryer. Bent, crushed or kinked dryer exhaust duct not only restricts the airflow and causes your dryer to work harder, it creates a dangerous situation. Lint becomes trapped and builds up over time, eventually leading to a dryer fire.

To this day, some dryer exhaust ducts are still the slinky foil type, or the inexpensive white vinyl (PVC) type. Did you know that both types are equally dangerous and put the safety of your home at risk?

Why these materials are inferior for the purpose of venting a dryer:

Flexible white vinyl (PVC) exhaust vent hose should never be used to connect a dryer. It is intended for bathroom vent use. As such, when exposed to heat, it will crumble and deteriorate over time. The flexible white vinyl vent is highly flammable and does not comply with building code requirements. It crushes easily, restricting airflow and creates blocked areas where lint can accumulate. The end result is a dryer fire in your home.

Similarly, the “slinky” foil type of duct does not conform to current building code standards due to its flammability. This type of material crushes easily, allowing flammable lint to accumulate in the exhaust duct, putting the safety of your home at risk.

The DryerFlex® Advantage

Constructed with all aluminum ribbon, DryerFlex fire-rated duct is as flexible as "slinky" foil duct, yet stronger than semi-rigid aluminum. This UL-Listed, building code and manufacturer approved duct is designed for superior performance in connecting the dryer’s exhaust port to a home’s in-wall dryer exhaust vent. Crush resistant with a smooth interior, DryerFlex provides maximum airflow, preventing lint from building up and keeps your dryer performing efficiently and effectively. DryerFlex protects against flamespread and is the safer choice for your home.
